Open letter to the Manitoba NDP Caucus

The following was sent to Premier Doer and the Manitoba NDP Caucus on Wednesday April 2nd. Keep the pressure on the government to keep the tuition freeze, contact the Premier at 945-3714 or gary.doer@leg.gov.mb.ca and let him know how important the freeze is to affordability of college and university in Manitoba!

We are contacting you on behalf of the University of Manitoba NDP. We are an active community of New Democrats at the U of M, and this year we organized activities such as movie nights, info tables, and an open house to promote the NDP on our campus.

A principal reason we support the NDP is because of our party's commitment to accessible post-secondary education and excellent track record of a well funded tuition freeze in Manitoba.

We read in the Winnipeg Free Press on April 1^st, 2008 that the provincial government has not announced whether or not the tuition freeze will continue during the NDP's third term. We are writing to inform you that we are in full support of the tuition freeze, as it helps ensure affordability of college and university in Manitoba.

Members of U of M NDP and other Young New Democrats in Manitoba campaigned for the NDP in the last provincial election with the understanding that the NDP would be maintaining the freeze if re-elected, as was stated on campaign materials. Also, at the most recent NDP convention delegates passed a resolution calling for a maintained tuition freeze.

U of M NDP is promoting a photo contest being organized by the New Democratic Youth of Canada.

WHERE: University Centre
WHEN: March 24th and 27th 10am-4pm
WHAT: U of M NDP club taking photos of participants
WHY: Send Harper a message and fight for lower student debt!

Stephen Harper is putting banks and big oil above the education of post-secondary students. On January 2^nd, Canada's top CEOs had pocketed what average Canadians will earn all year. And Harper still sent another $14 billion in tax cuts their way on the backs of students.

Stop by the U of M NDP info table to wear the Stephen Harper mask and create your photo. The person who submits the best photo in the cross-Canada contest will win a Nintendo Wii.
Photos can also be submitted online at www.youthunited.ndp.ca. The contest deadline is March 28, 2008 at 4pm central time.

FREE SHOWING of the Inconvenient Truth

What: A free showing of the Inconvenient Truth with a discussion afterwards about the film

Where: Rm 180 Helen Glass (the Student Group Resource Centre), in the basement of Nursing, just west of University Centre

When: Wednesday February 6th at 4pm (discussion starting around 5:30pm)

Why: It will be fun...and there will be free snacks!

Everyone is welcome!

U of M NDP Open House!!!

On Friday January 11th at U of M NDP hosted an Open House in the Student Group Resource Centre.

Thank you to everyone that came out (we had a great turn out!).

At the meeting we drew the winners of the three MP3 players that were donated to U of M NDP by NDP MLA's Marilyn Brick, Rob Altemeyer, and Andrew Swan.

CANADIAN BACON

When: Thursday September 20, 2007 at 3:30pm

Where: The Student Group Resource Centre, Room 180 Helen Glass, located in the basement of the Nursing Building at U of M (just west of University Centre). There will be signs in the building to point you in the right direction!

Why: For a good time.

Canadian Bacon is a satirical film Michael Moore released in 1995 and stars John Candy and Alan Alda. The film asks a question that is still extremely relevant today: could a U.S. President declare any country the new 'enemy' and have Americans believe him, even if that country was Canada? Click here to read a full review of the film from a progressive perspective.

This is U of M NDP's first event, and is open to all! Entrance is free and there will be snacks. After the movie (around 5pm) U of M NDP will be having a general meeting. Feel free to stick around after the film if you are interested in getting involved with our group!
